I just added some sounds to my recording of squirrels at

At the end, you can hear two of them chattering after they knocked my bird feeder off the shed.

New Mystery Sound

I’m almost positive I know what it is, and this certainly isn’t the sound it usually makes. I am open to your thoughts on what it is.

Poor Sam Peabody

Greetings to all,

Well, I guess I need to be more creative in soliciting comments on this blog. It’s been pretty quiet around the Bird Blind.
This morning we have high winds here in central MA; I’ve heard no birds yet this morning; 6:30 A.M. Recently I’ve been hearing a very weak-sounding Poor Sam Peabody call. Is it a White-throated Sparrow, or something imitating one? Not sure.
I’m also hearing lots of Carolina wrens, White-breasted nuthatches, Chickadees, Downy woodpeckers, and a red-bellied woodpecker.

Right now I’m sitting at my computer in my basement office. I have a boundary microphone on the back and also one on the front of my house outside, which are connected by cable to a mixer that goes to my computer sound car. I get stereo sound, however it’s really two distinct sound sources, since one is all the way at the back of the house and the other at the front.

Ah, I now hear a cardinal chipping. I’m not sure how anything can fly well in this strong wind. It is really blowing out there.

Yesterday my wife and I visited an apartment building in Newton MA near Boston. I was surprised at the variety of birds I was hearing. Nothing too exotic, but lots of birds actively feeding and calling.

Ah, now I hear a Bluejay calling.

Time for another cup of coffee.

Mysteries Solved

Well, I got some immediate responses from Mass. birders. Yes, Sound 02 is definitely Carolina Wrens. Folks agree with me that sound 01 is also a Carolina wren.
Sound 03 is a little more difficult and disturbing. I’m afraide a woodpecker is making a hole in the side of my house. My wife and I are thinking about getting new siding, but I wasn’t quite ready just yet. Maybe this will spur me onward to get the work booked.

Birding by Ear

I created this blog today hoping I could get folks to upload audio files of nature sounds they need help in identifying. However, I soon discovered that WAV or MP3 files cannot be uploaded here.
I need to come up with a new strategy.
